Sex
The anatomy of an individual's reproductive system, and secondary sex characteristics (Kirchengast 2014). |
Gender
The social roles based on the sex of the person or personal identification of one's own gender based on an internal awareness (Kirchengast 2014). |
The popularity of FFS reflects the societal recognition that sex is a "fundamentally social identity" (Plemons 2017, 2). With this recognition-based model of sex, the efficacy of FFS can only be judged based on the responses of others when in social situations. The growing popularity of a recognition-based model of sex suggests the larger societal shift in its understanding of gender and sex as not solely restricted to genitalia (Plemons 2017, 6).
